Leonard Steinberg, Baron Steinberg (born August 1, 1936 in Belfast , † November 2, 2009 in London ) was a British politician ( Conservative Party ), multimillionaire and entrepreneur.

life and career

Steinberg attended the Royal Belfast Academical Institution . In 1958 he founded Stanley Leisure Ltd in Belfast . He later became the company's non-executive chairman. In 1977 he moved the company headquarters to Liverpool after refusing to pay protection money to Irish Republican or Protestant unionist paramilitaries . He had previously been shot on February 23, 1977 by the Provisional Irish Republican Army . Despite moving to England , he described himself as "I am Jewish, Northern Irish and an Ulster Unionist ."

Since 2005, there have been changes in ownership at Stanley Leisure when William Hill plc took over the betting business and the Genting Group bought the casinos. Steinberg had sold a large number of its shares in 2004, but still retained an 11.3% stake in the company.

Steinberg, who was living in Hale at the time , was promoted to Life Peer in 2004 and supported the Conservative Party financially. In 2009 Steinberg became President of the Northern Ireland Friends of Israel Group , which was founded in March 2009 . On the occasion of the foundation, Steinberg spoke of the "long-term connections that exist between Northern Ireland and Israel ."

His personal net worth was estimated at around £ 108 million in 2005. He was also the founder and chairman of the trustees of the Steinberg Family Charitable Trust .

Steinberg died in London while on his way to a meeting of the House of Lords . Steinberg was married, his wife Beryl and he had two children and several grandchildren.

Membership in the House of Lords

Steinberg was promoted to Life Peer on June 23, 2004 , as Baron Steinberg , of Belfast in the County of Antrim . He gave his inaugural address at the House of Lords on November 25, 2004.
