Leonhard Boldt (born December 26, 1875 in Eutin ; † April 9, 1963 in Hamburg ) was a German portrait and landscape painter .

Life

Boldt was born in Eutin in 1875 as the fifth child of a butcher and grew up in poor conditions. After training as a hairdresser in Dassow , he worked for a barber in Altona and also made portraits of his customers. On the advice of a friend who had recognized his talent, he applied for a scholarship to train as a drawing teacher. He received the scholarship with the support of Grand Duke Friedrich August von Oldenburg (1852–1931) , then attended the art academies in Berlin, Munich and Paris and was a master student of Hubert von Herkomer in London.

In 1905 Boldt married the Swiss manufacturer's daughter Marie Siegrist (1864–1946) from Brugg in the canton of Aargau. His marriage made him a wealthy man and enabled him to study trips to Switzerland, Holland, Italy and Bornholm. The couple lived in Berlin for 27 years and then in Hamburg and Eutin, where they had spent the summers since 1906. Boldt had rented the tower room with a view of the Kellersee in the Hotel Seeschloss all year round .

In addition to his painting, he was personally and financially involved in Eutin and the surrounding communities in order to develop the bank zones through extensive landfill with hiking trails and to build bank reinforcements. The plant and design of the rose garden, the city bay and the lake park in Eutin are also on his initiative. In 1926 he had the Fissau ferry house built, which he later sold to the city of Eutin.

Boldt died in 1963 at the age of 87 and was buried in the family grave at the Plönerstrasse cemetery in Eutin.
