Leonhard Goppel

Leonhard Goppel (born November 6, 1911 in Munich ; † December 21, 1973 there ) was a Protestant theologian .

Life

Goppel passed his Abitur in 1931 at the Theresien-Gymnasium in Munich . He then began studying mathematics and physics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . He switched to Protestant theology at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen and the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (first theological exam in 1935 and second theological exam in 1938). In 1939 he was with Hermann Strathmann in Erlangen with the dissertation Typos. The typological interpretation of the Old Testament in the New for Dr. theol. PhD . From 1940 to 1945 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht . In 1946 he completed his habilitation. Afterwards he was a private lecturer at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and the Kirchliche Hochschule Hamburg as well as a professor at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen . In 1954 he became professor for the New Testament at the University of Hamburg . In 1967 he moved to the University of Munich, where he became the founding dean of the Evangelical Theological Faculty.

“Taking up the impulses of the Erlangen Lutheran theology ( Johann von Hofmann ) that shaped him , he endeavored to achieve a fruitful synthesis of historical-critical methodology and church tradition of interpretation. What was important was his understanding of salvation history, which he based on the typological relationship between the Old Testament and the New Testament following Gerhard von Rad . "

Goppel was married to the granddaughter of the theologian Adolf Schlatter , with whom he had two daughters.
