Leonhard Köppe

Wilhelm Hermann Leonhard Köppe (born November 20, 1884 in Torgau , † March 18, 1969 in Halle ) was a German ophthalmologist and university teacher.

Life

He was a son of the wealthy district physician August Hermann Köppe (1838–1886) and Auguste Sophie born. Eckardt. From 1894 to 1905 Köppe attended grammar school in Torgau. He then studied medicine in Freiburg and Halle (Saale ). Köppe passed the state examination in 1910 and then completed internships in Halle and Berlin , which he obtained in 1912 with a doctorate in Dr. med. completed. As a result, Köppe worked as a volunteer assistant in Breslau and Leipzig and then as a general practitioner in Dommitzsch . In 1914 he took an assistant position at the University of Halle, where he completed his habilitation in 1918. Then he studied mathematics and physics. The knowledge he gained enabled him to introduce a decisive improvement in microscopy of the living eye. In 1921, Köppe was awarded the title of non-civil servant extraordinary professor. In the same year the university appointed him Prof. h. c. As a result, Köppe held lectures on microscopy of the eye at the universities of Madrid , Granada and Seville at the invitation of the Spanish government . He also read in Czechoslovakia , Croatia , Italy , the Netherlands , USA and Canada . From 1923 to 1925 he was a research fellow in Rochester (USA). After returning to Halle, Köppe concentrated on optical research. 1930 to 1931 he worked as a research professor in Iowa (USA). After his return he took up his teaching position at the University of Halle. On May 1, 1933, he was admitted to the NSDAP (membership number 1,881,628). During the Second World War, Köppe worked in the physics department of the Army News School on solving optical problems for air and submarine weapons. After the war ended in 1945, Köppe was dismissed from university and practiced as a private ophthalmologist.
