Leonia is a genus of land-living snails from the family of terrestrial snails (Pomatiidae) in the order of Sorbeoconcha . The genus is only recently known.

features

The egg-shaped-conical housing shows a slight sexual dimorphism: the females are 17 to 22 mm high and 11 to 12 mm wide, the males 16 to 17 mm high and 9 to 10 mm wide. It has 5 to 6 strongly convex turns with a deep seam. The ornamentation consists of fine spiral lines or spiral rows of dots and equally fine radial lines. This creates a net-like pattern. Small pits can be deepened in the squares or rectangles created by the crossing lines.

The obliquely egg-shaped mouth is angled at the top. In the side view, it is approximately perpendicular to the spiral axis. It is simple with only slightly bent back and only slightly thickened mouth seams. The housing is thick-shelled and colored whitish to light red-brown. A band with dark spots is often formed below the seam. The shell is quite firm.

The calcified operculum is egg-shaped and strongly curved outwards. It has only one turn, and the nucleus sits near the edge of the spindle. The radula consists of seven elements per transverse row, with the central tooth and the two posterior teeth being almost the same in size and shape. The marginal tooth, on the other hand, is very broad and finely serrated.

Similar genera

In comparison with the genera Pomatias and Tudorella , the ornamentation is much less pronounced, the cases appear smoother.

Geographical distribution

The three species of the genus Leonia occur in North Africa from the province of Oran in western Algeria to the Rif mountains in Morocco. In the south the distribution area extends to the Sefrou province (south of Fès ) in the foothills of the Middle Atlas and in western Morocco to Essaouira . It also stretches along the Spanish Mediterranean coast up to the height of the Murcia region ( Isla del Barón in the salt water lagoon Mar Menor ).

Taxonomy

The taxon was established by William Baird in 1850 . There are currently three species in the genus:
