Leopold Ferdinand Theodor Eduard Hartmann (born February 16, 1820 in Worbis (Erfurt district), † August 16, 1896 in Kassel ) was a Prussian major general .

origin

His parents were the Privy Councilor Karl Ludwig Hartmann († 1871) and his wife Luise Josepha, née Hofmann († 1857).

Life

He received his education at the grammar school in Mühlhausen (Thuringia) . After graduating, he joined the 25th Infantry Regiment on September 16, 1839 as a three-year-old volunteer . There he was promoted to Portepeefähnrich on January 27, 1840 and to Seconde-Lieutenant on January 14, 1843. As such he was posted from April 1, 1846 to March 31, 1847 in the 8th Combined Reserve Battalion. He took part in the Baden campaign in 1849 and fought near Homburg, Rinnthal and Kuppenheim. On September 20, 1849, he received a commendation for Rinnthal.

From April 26th to June 26th 1851 he came to the 25th Landwehr Regiment, where he was company commander in the III. Battalion in Malmedy . On October 1, 1852 he became an adjutant and investigating officer of the battalion. Promoted to Premier-Lieutenant on May 15, 1856, he was company commander in 1st Battalion in Aachen from July 14, 1856 to June 30, 1860 , during which time he was promoted to captain on May 31, 1859. He came to the 65th Infantry Regiment on July 1, 1860, and was appointed company commander there on October 17, 1860. During the German War of 1866 he fought near Münchengrätz and Königgrätz .

After the war he was aggregated as a major in the 29th Infantry Regiment on March 22, 1868, and assigned there on August 10, 1868. On July 6, 1868, he joined the 2nd Battalion as commander.

During the Franco-Prussian War he was used from August 18, 1870 to October 21, 1870 and from January 10, 1871 to February 22, 1871 as leader of the 29th Infantry Regiment , as the commander of Colonel von Blumröder in the battle Gravelotte was badly wounded. He fought at Amiens , Hallue and St Quentin, as well as the battles at Saarbrücken, Thionville and Buchy. For this he received the Iron Cross 2nd Class on September 24, 1870 and the Iron Cross 1st Class on September 1, 1871 (for St. Quentin).

After the war he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on March 22, 1873. On February 11, 1875 he was with the character as a colonel into question asked and (4 rheinisches) in the 30th Landwehr Regiment placed where he district commander of the II. Battalion in Saarlouis . In this capacity he was transferred to the 1st Battalion of the 25th Landwehr Regiment in Aachen on September 14, 1880 . He received a pension as well as the permission to continue to wear the uniform of the 25th Infantry Regiment. On January 19, 1896, he was given the character of major general and died on August 16, 1896 in Kassel.

He married on April 18, 1857 in Naumburg an der Saale Bertha Helene von Kraewel (1837–1861), a daughter of the appellate court councilor Rudolf von Kraewel . After her death in 1871 he married Bertha Hartmann .
