Leopold Matthieu

Heinrich Friedrich Leopold Matthieu (* 1750 in Berlin , † 1778 in Göttingen ) was a German portrait and history painter.

Life

Matthieu was the son of the painter David Matthieu and the painter Barbara Rosina Lisiewska . He was a student of his mother and attended the drawing academy in The Hague in 1766/1767 ( Haagsche Teekenacademie as a direct forerunner of the Dutch Academy of Arts). As a student of the Belles Lettres in Göttingen, he portrayed the two wives of the poet Gottfried August Bürger , Dorette and Molly . In 1774 he created a portrait of the poet Heinrich Christian Boie . The portrait of Lichtenberg commissioned by Gleim was thwarted by his untimely death. Other works were the portraits he made of Johann Carl Leonhart , Konrad Arnold Schmid and Gottfried August Bürger. He was a brother of Georg David Matthieu .
