Leopold Spaeth

Leopold Spaeth (also: Späth ; born October 30, 1928 in Schaulen in Lithuania ; † April 22, 2006 ) was a German politician ( CDU ). From 1971 to 1984 he was a member of the Landtag of Schleswig-Holstein and then a member of the European Parliament until 1989 .

Life and work

Leopold Spaeth was born in Schaulen in Lithuania and grew up in North Frisia . He attended secondary school in Memel and Flensburg . In 1945 he graduated from school with a secondary school leaving certificate. He completed an apprenticeship as a gardener , passed the assistant examination and attended a technical school. In 1952 he started his own business. He was married and had three children. He last lived in Ostenfeld near Husum .

politics

Spaeth joined the CDU in 1959. From 1959 to 1966 he was district chairman of the Junge Union (JU) and from 1961 to 1967 JU state board member, of which he held the office of treasurer for three years . In addition, since 1961 he was a member of the board of the CDU district association Husum, in 1963 he became deputy district chairman, in 1969 district chairman. Spaeth remained chairman of the North Friesland District Association, which had been renamed in 1970, until 1986.

Spaeth was active in local politics from 1959 to the mid-1970s, he was a community representative , deputy mayor , district councilor , member of the district committee and first deputy district administrator . Since 1967 he was also a member of the supervisory board of Amrumer Schiffahrts AG, and from 1968 also on the supervisory board of the North Economic Development Agency. Between 1965 and 1967 he worked as a lay judge at the large criminal chamber of the Flensburg Regional Court .

In the state elections in 1971 , 1975 , 1979 and 1983 , Spaeth was elected to the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament as a direct candidate for the CDU in constituency 5 (Husum-Land). He was a member of parliament from May 24, 1971 to July 31, 1984, when he stepped down from the European Parliament following the election. In the state parliament he was member of the parliamentary group committee of the CDU since 1975. From 1980 until he left the Kiel state parliament, he was also the parliamentary representative of the Ministry of the Interior of Schleswig-Holstein. Spaeth worked, among other things, in the Agriculture Committee or the Agriculture and Environmental Protection Committee and the Interior Committee or the Interior and Legal Committee, which he chaired from April 1983. He was also a member of the municipal investment fund committee, the state allotment garden committee and the state election committee.

Spaeth took part in the seventh Federal Assembly on May 23, 1979 , at which Karl Carstens was elected Federal President .

In the European elections in 1984 , Spaeth was elected to the European Parliament for the CDU, he was a member of the parliamentary group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) from July 24, 1984 to July 25, 1989 . In the European Parliament, Spaeth was a member of the Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development as well as the delegation for relations with the countries of Northern Europe and the Nordic Council .

Honors

Spaeth was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 1978 .
