State election in Schleswig-Holstein 1979
The 9th state election in Schleswig-Holstein took place on April 29, 1979 . Prime Minister Gerhard Stoltenberg ran again for re-election. As in 1975, he was challenged by Klaus Matthiesen , SPD parliamentary group leader and opposition leader since 1973.
Previous state election
In the state elections in 1975 , the CDU defended its absolute majority in the country. The SPD under Klaus Matthiesen could not take over the government. The FDP had returned to the state parliament with 7.1 percent. The Südschleswigsche Voters' Association (SSW), which was exempt from the five percent hurdle , was represented by a member in the state parliament.

The SPD was able to slightly expand its result with 41.7 percent of the vote. Together with their envisaged coalition partner FDP (5.7 percent) and the SSW (1.4 percent), which was exempt from the five percent hurdle , it was able to unite 8,742 votes more than the CDU, which with slight losses to 48.3 percent the vote came and still had a majority of one seat. The CDU, which started with the slogan “With head and heart for Schleswig-Holstein”, would have lost the absolute majority if the SPD had received 1,295 more votes. The Greens , who were appearing for the first time, were the fourth strongest force, but with 2.4% of the votes they clearly failed to make it into the state parliament.
