Leopold Stolba

Leopold Stolba (born November 11, 1863 in Gaudenzdorf , † November 17, 1929 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter, graphic artist, draftsman and poster artist.

After attending secondary school, Stolba studied sculpture (with interruptions) from 1879 to 1890 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Edmund von Hellmer and Carl Kundmann . After completing his studies, he made several study trips to Italy until 1895.

Stolba worked as a freelance artist in Vienna. He created figural compositions, landscapes, butterflies, beetles and flowers, as etchings, woodcuts and watercolors. He also designed wallpaper and textile patterns as well as marble papers. From the 1890s he drew pencil caricatures.

Leopold Stolba was friends with the painters Rudolf Bacher and Eugen Schroth . He received financial support from the Wittgenstein family . From 1900 he was a member of the Vienna Secession , for which he designed posters in 1904 and 1905;

From 1902 to 1903 he worked as a member of the editorial board and illustrator of the magazine " Ver Sacrum ". He became a founding member (1880), archivist and secretary of the Haagengesellschaft as well as a member of the Vienna Artists' Association .
