Leszek Surawski (born July 18, 1960 ) is a Polish officer with the rank of general . From February 2017 to July 2018 he was the military commander of the Polish armed forces .

Military career

Promotions

In 1980, Surawski entered the officers' school of the Polish Land Forces in Wrocław . After completing his training, he served in various posts in the 75th Mechanized Regiment in Bartoszyce from 1984 to 1990 . After two years of postgraduate studies at the Academy of National Defense in Warsaw , his service led him from 1992 to 1998 to the 1st Mechanized Division in Legionowo and the 9th Mechanized Brigade in Siedlce . In the course of this activity he was promoted to major in 1996 . In the next few years several training courses and various assignments as a staff officer followed ; u. a. also a foreign mission in Iraq as deputy chief of staff of the Polish association.

In 2008 Surawski was promoted to brigadier general and appointed commander of the 20th mechanized brigade in Bartoszyce. Two years later he moved to the General Staff . There, too, he held various posts and was appointed first deputy to the Chief of Staff in 2016. When Mieczysław Gocuł took his leave at the beginning of 2017, Surawski succeeded him in the office of Chief of Staff. The official handover took place on January 31, 2017. In March 2018 he was promoted to general. Only about four months later, on July 2, 2018, he handed over command of the armed forces to Rajmund Andrzejczak .

Private

Leszek Surawski is married. He and his wife have three children. In addition to his mother tongue, he also speaks English.
