The two lighthouses of IJmuiden are on the Dutch North Sea coast in the province of North Holland . They show the straight path over the dredged shipping channel IJgeul to the port entrance of the North Sea Canal , which leads from IJmuiden to the port of Amsterdam . Due to their different heights, the two beacons form a fire guide for approaching the port, as the two lights must be one above the other when entering from the sea.

Building the towers

Both lighthouses were constructed by Quirinus Harder , a Dutch architect from the Dutch Navigation Authority for Pilotage (Dutch Nederlands Loodswezen ). The building was carried out in 1878 by the company DA Schretlen & Co from Leiden with a coat of red-brown paint. In 1909 the towers were electrified. Initially, both towers were almost identical in height and each showed a white light through fixed Fresnel lenses . The altitude should help to avoid confusion with the lights of fishermen or other ships. This turned out to be unsuitable in practice, which is why the eastern tower ( upper fire ) received a rotating light in 1907. The western tower kept the constant light and only served as a guide light for the entrance to the port mouth. The towers have been included in the Dutch list as Rijksmonument since 1981 , so that they will at least be preserved as a building. Viewing is not possible.

Big tower

The Great or High Lighthouse (Dutch Hoge Vuurtoren ) stands as a highly visible landmark in the midst of harbor buildings between the Haring Haven and the Vissershaven of IJmuiden. Its height is approximately 42 meters and wears in a cast iron pan, a lamp out of copper , from which the wildfire in 53 meters above NAP ( Normal Amsterdam Peil ) every five seconds ( ID ) flashes. A mercury vapor lamp of 2000 watts generates a light intensity of 3.5 million candelas via a double rotating lens , which can be seen 29 nautical miles (54 kilometers) in good visibility. Four headlights with a diameter of 450 mm are installed under the lantern as a top light for the fire control line. The white festival fire has a range of four nautical miles (7 kilometers).

Small tower

The small or low lighthouse (Dutch location Vuurtoren ) is located further west between Haringshaven and IJmondhaven. As a lower light, the small tower turned out to be too high, as the navigation for approaching the port was impaired. Therefore, in 1909, it was decided to remove the top 10 meters from the tower, including the lantern. This part has found a new place on the West Frisian island of Vlieland , where it shows its light as an independent lighthouse on the Vuurduin . A new lantern was placed on the hull of the small tower, which means that the tower is only 24 meters high today. As with the large tower, the four headlights for the lower fire are attached below the lantern.

In the 1960s the outer port of IJmuiden was redesigned with the extension of the jetties and the port entrance. This was accompanied by a shift of the fairway to the south, which also meant that the fire guidelines had to be adjusted. Accordingly, the Small Tower was relocated 40 meters to the south. The project was made easier by the construction made of cast iron, since “only” the tower had to be unscrewed in order to be moved to the new location and screwed on again.
