The Westermarkelsdorf lighthouse , sometimes also referred to as Leuchtfeuer am Hakenorth , is a listed lighthouse on the island of Fehmarn in the Ostholstein district in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein . It stands on the northwest corner of the island and, as an orientation and warning light, shows the way into the Fehmarnbelt .

The lighthouse is octagonal and was built from brick masonry. The house for the lighthouse keeper is directly attached and painted yellow like the tower. The tower, originally around 10 meters high, was raised to 17.7 meters in 1902.
In the vicinity and in the lighthouse itself there is a measuring station of the German Weather Service (Westermarkelsdorf measuring station).
Nautical
The Westermarkelsdorf beacon is the responsibility of the WSA Lübeck and is remotely monitored by the traffic control center in Travemünde . The identifier Blk. - 10 s = 2.5 s + (7.5) s is generated by a rotating screen.
technology
The light source was initially a two-wick kerosene lamp, which was replaced by a benzene incandescent lamp in 1922. The beacon has been operated electrically since 1924.
The tower is still equipped with the original belt lamp , focal length 250 millimeters, from 1924. Since 1999 a HQI-T-400-W halogen discharge lamp has been used, which generates a brightness of 33104 candela . The nominal range is about. 7.4 nautical miles. An emergency power generator is available in the event of a power failure.
New tower
The WSA Lübeck considers a new building to be necessary because the old lighthouse does not meet the requirements. The new lighthouse will be built approx. 30 m next to the old, listed lighthouse. The new construction depends on the progress of the belt tunnel project ( Fehmarnbelt tunnel ).
