Leucotina knopi is a species of the marine snail genus Leucotina . In addition to the genus Amathina, this belongs to the Amathinidae family, which is closely related to the very similar Pyramidellidae family. Was named Leucotina knopi after the German journalists Daniel Knop , whose name also stolonifera genus Knopia carries.

features

The casing of Leucotina knopi is highly conical with slightly curved turns. On the surface, spiral stripes with radial stripes form a net-like pattern. The species reaches a case height of just over 22 mm. Leucotina knopi does not seem to be very variable in terms of its casing, because all specimens collected so far all have the same, species-typical casing shape, and the shell wall has the same light permeability, a phenomenon that cannot be observed in the closely related Leucotina species.

distribution and habitat

The specimens collected so far come from Aliguay Island, which belongs to the southernmost archipelago of the Philippines ( Mindanao ), and from Mactan Island, Cebu (Philippines). Little is known about their habitat. Leucotina knopi lives at a depth of 50–200 m on sandy and muddy soil and is only occasionally brought to the surface by fishing nets.

Way of life

The shape of the casing of Leucotina knopi makes the close relationship to the species of the family Pyramidellidae , which are known in marine aquariums as parasites of giant clams (Tridacnidae), very clear. It can also be assumed that it lives parasitically, as this is the case with most members of the Amathinidae and Pyramidellidae families.

Systematics

In addition to L. knopi, two other Leucotina species have so far been found in the Philippines : Leucotina adamsi Kuroda & Habe 1971 and Leucotina sagamiensis Kuroda & Habe 1971. It differs markedly from both due to the shape of its housing. The most similar is the species Leucotina dianae (Adams 1855), which is not found in the Philippines, but in southern Japan.
