The film is about a group of girls who live at the Vestalis Academy and are supposed to grow up there to become a “perfect woman”. To do this, they must learn the virtues of purity , obedience, and humility and always be diligent and disciplined. They are accompanied and instructed by Miss Brixil as a mentor. If the girls reach level 16, which corresponds to the age of 16, they are given the opportunity to be adopted by a family. Furthermore, the students are forced to take vitamins daily from the doctor Dr. To take Miro. The girls are also told that the air outside the academy is poisoned so they never leave.

As the rules-abiding Vivien has just reached level 16, she sees Sophia, an old friend of level 10, again. Sophia convinces her to give up the vitamins, whereupon Vivien cannot fall asleep and notices how she and another girl are taken out of the room. She continues to pretend to be asleep and watches a couple look at their bodies and negotiate the purchase with Miss Brixil. Then the girls are brought back to the room and Vivien exchanges with Sophia what is happening. Sophia wants to leave the place as quickly as possible, but Vivien tries to trust Dr. Building up Miro and learning more about him. However, the latter sees a danger in their curiosity, which goes against the virtues, and tries to ensure order.

In the end, the situation escalates more and more and there are several disciplinary measures against the students. Sophia and Vivien later discover through their research that the Level 16 students are to be killed for skin grafts . They then try to convince the other students to flee and that the air is not poisoned, but they are initially skeptical and fearful of the consequences. However, in the end, Miss Brixil confesses that she is also a buyer of the skin graft and that Dr. Miro act as a senior physician. The girls lock Miss Brixil in the same hiding place in which Vivien was locked up by her as a punishment, and escape from the academy. Dr. Miro tries to stop the two of them and still lure them to their side, but he fails, and the academy is finally inspected by security forces and a paramedic is sent inside.

The filming took place in an old police station in Toronto , which was built in the 1930s . The film was produced by Dark Sky Films. The film was first released in Germany on February 20, 2018.

reception

At the “Blood in the Snow” festival, the film won in the categories of best screenplay, best actress and best director. Gizmodo compares the film to the television series The Handmaid's Tale - The Maid's Report . On Rotten Tomatoes , the film received a user rating of 80%, while the film critic rating was only 67%.
