Levi Maish

Levi Maish (born November 22, 1837 in Conewago , York County , Pennsylvania , †  February 26, 1899 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1879 and again from 1887 to 1891 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Levi Maish attended public schools in his home country and then the York County Academy . He then worked as a teacher. During the civil war he served in the Union Army until 1863 , in which he rose to colonel. After studying law at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and being admitted to the bar in 1864, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1867 and 1868 . In 1872 he was hired by the State Legislature to review some employees in York County.

In the congressional election of 1874 Maish was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the 19th  constituency of Pennsylvania, where he succeeded Republican Carlton Brandaga Curtis on March 4, 1875 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1879 . In 1878 he was not re-elected. In the elections of 1886 Maish was re-elected to Congress in the 19th district of his state, where he replaced John Augustus Swope on March 4, 1887 . Until March 3, 1891 he was able to spend two more legislative periods there. In 1890 he was not confirmed in his mandate.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Levi Maish practiced as a lawyer in Washington. He died there on February 26, 1899. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery , Virginia .
