Career

John Swope attended the common schools and the Mount St. Mary's Academy in Emmitsburg ( Maryland ). He then studied at Princeton College until 1847 . After a subsequent medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and his license as a doctor, he began to practice in this profession for a few years; after that he worked in Baltimore in trade. He later returned to Gettysburg, where he became President of Gettysburg National Bank in 1879 . He was also active in the handicrafts and agriculture. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party .

After the death of MP William Addison Duncan , Swope was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the by-election due for the 19th seat of Pennsylvania, where he took up his new mandate on December 23, 1884. After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1887 . However, the by-election for the legislative period beginning March 4, 1885, for which the late Duncan had already been elected at the time of his death, took place later. Only on November 5, 1885, Swope, after an electoral victory, was able to take his seat again. The mandate was therefore vacant between March 4th and November 5th, 1885.

In 1886 Swope declined to run again. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he stayed in Washington, where he worked in the banking industry. He died there on December 6, 1910.
