The Lewis nunatak is an isolated and mostly snow-covered nunatak in Marie Byrd Land in West Antarctica . It rises 16 km southeast of the Davies Escarpment and 22.5 km southeast of the Nolan Pillar at the southern end of the Thiel Mountains .
Peter Bermel and Arthur B. Ford , who jointly led an expedition of the United States Geological Survey from 1960 to 1961 in the Thiel Mountains, made the name. It is named after the American geologist Charles R. Lewis, who carried out investigations in the region around McMurdo Sound and in the Balaena Islands on board various research vessels from 1955 to 1956 .
