Lewis Moonie, Baron Moonie

Lewis George Moonie, Baron Moonie (born February 25, 1947 in Dundee ) is a British pharmacologist and Labor Party politician who was a member of the House of Commons for almost 18 years and has been a life peer member of the House of Lords since 2005 .

Life

Studies and professional career as a doctor

After attending Grove Academy, Moonie began studying medicine at the University of St Andrews , graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery  (MBCh.B.) degree in 1970 . After completing his studies, he worked in various medical positions between 1970 and 1975 and obtained a doctorate in podiatry  (DPM) in 1975 . He then worked from 1976 to 1980 as a senior medical advisor and clinical pharmacologist at pharmaceutical companies in the Netherlands , Switzerland and Edinburgh , and in 1979 he was a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists .

He subsequently completed postgraduate studies in health sciences at the University of Edinburgh , which he completed in 1981 with a Master of Science  (M.Sc.) in Community Medicine. During this time, he began a health sciences trainee with the Fife Health Department in 1980 and was a public health consultant there from 1984 to 1987.

Member of the House of Commons and House of Lords

In the general election on May 11, 1987 , Moonie was elected as a candidate for the Labor Party for the first time as a member of the House of Commons, where he represented the constituency of Kirkcaldy for almost 18 years before he renounced the election in the general election on May 5, 2005 . In his last re-election in the general election on June 7, 2001 , he was able to prevail among others against the candidate of the Scottish National Party , Shirley-Anne Somerville .

During his long parliamentary membership, he was first from 1988 to 1989 member of the House Committee on the Treasury ( Treasury ) and after only spokesman for the opposition Labor Group for Trade and Industry and then from 1992 to 1994 for science and technology. Subsequently, Moonie served as opposition spokesman for industry between 1994 and 1995, and most recently as opposition spokesman for national heritage from 1995 to 1997.

After the Labor Party won the general election on May 1, 1997 and Prime Minister Tony Blair took office , Moonie first became a member of the Liaison Committee and the Commission of the House of Commons, before becoming Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Veterans in the Ministry of Defense on January 31, 2000 was called. He remained in this government post until June 13, 2003 and has been a member of the supervisory board of AEA Technology, a privatized company of the UKAEA ( United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority ) , since 2004 .

By a letters patent dated June 22, 2005, Moonie was raised to the nobility after retiring from the House of Commons as a life peer with the title Baron Moonie , of Bennochy in Fife . Shortly thereafter took place on 5 July 2005 its introduction ( Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords . In the House of Lords he belongs to the Labor Party faction.

In light of the 2016 referendum on the UK's future membership of the European Union, Moonie joined the Laborleave campaign , which advocates leaving the EU.
