The Lewiston – Queenston Bridge , also called Queenston – Lewiston Bridge , is a road bridge between Canada and the United States that connects the American city of Lewiston (New York) in the state of New York with the Canadian town of Queenston in the province of Ontario on the other side of the Niagara River connects.

The Lewiston – Queenston Bridge was built when the second Lewiston – Queenston Suspension Bridge, about 1.1 km downstream, was no longer able to cope with the traffic. Besides the Peace Bridge, it is the only bridge over the Niagara River that is approved for heavy traffic , since the Rainbow Bridge can only be used by cars. In addition to the river, it also crosses the Niagara Parkway on the Canadian side and the Robert Moses Parkway on the American side. There are extensive plazas for border clearance at both ends of the bridge . Tolls are only collected in the direction of Canada. There is no NEXUS border clearance, but a NEXUS lane towards the USA. The bridge has five lanes but no walkways. The middle lane can be released for one or the other direction as required. It is operated by the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission .

The Lewiston – Queenston Bridge is the last bridge over the Niagara River before it flows into Lake Ontario .

About one kilometer upstream there are two almost opposite power plants, the Robert Moses Niagara power plant of the New York Power Authority and the Canadian Sir Adam Beck power plant .

Technical details

The Lewiston – Queenston Bridge was designed by Hardesty & Hanover , the same engineering company that had designed the Rainbow Bridge under its then name Wadell & Hardesty 21 years earlier . While it is not a direct copy of the older bridge, it has similar dimensions and looks almost exactly the same. Construction began on November 2, 1960; on November 1, 1962 the bridge was opened to traffic.

The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge is a clamped steel - arch bridge with spandrel roadway. The entire bridge structure including the approach bridges over the two streets is 488 m (1600 ft) long. The bridge deck of the arch bridge is 315 m (1035 ft) long between the expansion joints over the outer supports. The foundations of these supports, together with the overhanging transoms, form a large concrete block. The span of the bridge arch is therefore slightly shorter than the bridge deck at 305 m (1000 ft). The bridge arch consists of two steel hollow boxes with a construction height of 4 m, which are stiffened against each other by triangular braces. The top of the bridge deck is 113 m above the water of the river.
