Lia Nirgad (born 1962 ) is an in Tel Aviv living author , editor and translator . She is a member of the human rights organization Machsom Watch .

life and work

Lia Nirgad is a daughter of Polish Jews who emigrated to Palestine during the Holocaust . Since her father, Ram Nirgad, worked as the Israeli ambassador , she was born in Belgium and grew up in Jerusalem , Nigeria during the Biafra war, and Argentina . She was confronted with war and violence very early on during these stays in crisis areas. At the age of 17 she returned to Israel and did her military service there, including social work with street gangs in Tel Aviv and smaller suburbs. After her military service, she began studying philosophy and history at Tel Aviv University . A PhD - scholarship for the University of Cambridge , which she received after graduation, she broke off for a week to work as a freelance writer to.

She was active in various political organizations for a long time and since 2003 has been a member of the independent human rights organization Machsom Watch , an Israeli women's group that monitors the military activities and behavior of the Israeli military at the checkpoints to the Palestinian territories. Her book Winter in Qualandia processes the experiences made at the Qualandia checkpoint between Jerusalem and Ramallah . This text was also published as a play of the same name. An adaptation of the play with the title Human Checkpoint - Winter in Qualandia was performed in 2010 by the Wu-Wei-Theater in Mousonturm in Frankfurt am Main .

Nirgad wrote several novels and a children's book , which was also edited for Israeli children's television. She also works as a translator. a.
