Lia Quartapelle Procopio (born August 15, 1982 in Varese ) is an Italian economist and politician of the Partito Democratico (PD).

Career

Lia Quartapelle is the daughter of the engineering scientist Luigi Quartapelle Procopio , who was professor of fluid and gas dynamics at the Milan Polytechnic . She herself attended Atlantic College in Wales, where she passed the International Baccalaureate in 2001 . She then studied economics and development research at the University of Pavia before completing a master's degree at SOAS University of London and at the University of Florence with a focus on development economics . Quartapelle worked as an economist for the Agenzia italiana per la cooperazione allo sviluppo in Mozambique , then as a research assistant in the Africa program of the Istituto per gli studi di politica internazionale (ISPI) in Milan. She received her doctorate in 2012 from the University of Pavia with a thesis on development economics in African countries. Then she taught as a lecturer for development policy in Pavia.

In 2006 Quartapelle was one of the founders of the first online branch of the Democratici di Sinistra (Left Democrats). After the merger of DS with other center-left parties , this resulted in the Milan's online local association, the Partito Democratico (PD), whose secretary (chairwoman) was Quartapelle from 2008 to 2012. She was elected to the PD National Assembly in 2009.

In the general election in 2013 it was for the Partito Democratico in the Italian Parliament voted. There she is a member of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, of which she was secretary from 2013 to 2015. In her committee work, she was particularly committed to human rights and sustainable development . Quartapelle participated in meetings of the Trilateral Commission as a David Rockefeller Fellow in 2015 and 2016 . At the beginning of 2016 she appeared as one of 118 MPs who nominated the Afghan women's national cycling team for the Nobel Peace Prize. From February 2016 she was spokeswoman for the PD parliamentary group in the Foreign Affairs Committee. In the 2018 general election , she was re-elected as a direct candidate for a constituency in Milan (Lombardy 1 13). She is still a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and since August 2019 she has also been a member of the parliamentary committee of inquiry into the death of Giulio Regeni .

In January 2020 she married the former politician Claudio Martelli , who is 39 years older than her.
