action

Antonio is a chauffeur in Rome. He reads science fiction novels - you can hear the texts off-screen - which always revolve around a hero who has landed in a new world he does not know. He only has social contacts with his boss and colleagues.

One evening he met Maria when he almost drove over to her daughter Lisa. He falls in love with Maria, with whom he also spends a night. Maria cannot or does not want to get involved with him. She has problems with her frozen food shop, which is not doing well, and therefore has great problems paying off her debts to Saverio, a gangster. Because of these difficulties, she has too little time for her daughter and therefore gets into trouble with the youth welfare office.

Saverio is a little godfather who does his business with illegal money lending, extortion of protection money and the subletting of apartments to illegal immigrants. Antonio, who secretly wants to help Maria, becomes Saverio's chauffeur and debt collector for the cancellation of her debts until he can no longer endure his crooked business and gets out.

Maria's daughter Lisa tries to escape and comes to her grandparents on the instructions of the youth welfare office. Maria gradually realizes that she has fallen in love with Antonio ...

Wintry Rome makes a beautiful backdrop for this melancholy love story.

Reviews

"The light of my eyes is a melancholy metropolitan epic and a love story at the same time, which, with full understanding and a keen sense of the breaks in the life of completely normal people, explores whether an approach is even possible once you have chosen the path of solitude."

- kino-zeit.de

“Guiseppe [sic!] Piccioni's film 'Light of My Eyes' […] closes off easy access. He may only be loved [...] at second glance. But then as intimately as in the case of the brittle couple, who only become lovers at second glance and after a long journey. "

- jump-cut

"Piccioni's melancholy journey through the metropolises is a wonderfully grown-up love story, without simple solutions and a simple happy ending, but with surprising moments of happiness that are all the more lasting."
