history

The sponsor is the Stattkino Berlin eV founded by Torsten Frehse and Wulf Sörgel in 1994

The Lichtblick-Kino emerged from the Stattkino, which only existed in 1994 but did not have a permanent venue. It organized film series on political issues. In 1995, the Lichtblick-Kino started operating at Wolliner Strasse 19. On September 30, 1997, the operators of the cinema had their lease terminated: The hall became part of the adjacent Delta Filmtheater (later Arkona), the owner of which wanted to build a cinema center there. The Lichtblick-Kino was able to reopen a few months later in 1998 in the house project Kastanienallee 77.

Principles

The cinema has been operated as a collective since it was founded. “We are a collective and want to prove that collective work also works,” is a principle. Instead of hierarchical decisions, the principle of consensus and the right of veto apply. The Lichtblick-Kino does not claim any state funding and does not receive any advertising income.

Lichtblick-Kino and the people who shaped it from the beginning have an effect far beyond the showing of films: Numerous former and current participants are active in the cinema industry today, as distributors , cinema operators or filmmakers. Many projects and initiatives in the Berlin cinema landscape have emerged from the cinema environment.

place

The Lichtblick-Kino is a one-room cinema and one of the smallest movie theaters in Berlin. The cinema is only about 50 square meters and has 32 seats.

The building Kastanienallee 77 is the oldest house in Prenzlauer Berg. Today's cinema rooms used to house a butcher's apartment and his sales room, of which you can still see remnants in the foyer, such as tiles on the walls or metal brackets with rods with meat hooks. A projector room and nine rows of seats with a relatively high gradation were installed in the smallest of spaces. The ceiling is stucco, and one wall is painted with colorful squares on which five square lamps shine in different colors.

The technical equipment is designed for D-Cinema, 35 mm and 16 mm .
