Marie Langer (1979)

Marie Langer b. Glas ( August 31, 1910 in Vienna - December 22, 1987 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentine psychoanalyst and doctor of Austrian descent who was socially and politically active throughout her life.

Life

Coming from the assimilated Jewish upper class, Marie Glas attended the Black Forest School from 1922 , where she was confronted with Marxist and feminist ideas. A few months before graduating from high school, she married Herbert Manovill in 1929 , from whom she divorced in 1932. In 1933 she became a member of the Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ), which was banned six weeks later. During her medical studies she completed an analysis with Richard Sterba . In 1935 she completed her studies, trained as an anesthetist , worked in the women's department of the Psychiatric University Clinic with Heinz Hartmann and joined the Vienna Psychoanalytic Association (WPV). Thus she was forced to live in double underground, since she had to keep her membership in both the KPÖ and the WPV in the other association secret.

In 1936 she got involved with her future husband Max Langer (1902-1965) in the Spanish Civil War and worked in the medical service of the International Brigades . 1939 marriage and emigration to Uruguay , 1942 relocation to Argentina , where she worked as an analyst. Marie Langer was instrumental in founding the Asociación Psicoanalítíca Argentina (APA), but came into conflict with this organization two decades later - because of her union activities and her commitment to left-wing psychoanalysis. In 1971, her lecture Psychoanalysis and / or Social Revolution caused a scandal at the IPA Congress in Vienna and provoked the currents of psychoanalytic orthodoxy that conformed to the spirit of the spirit. Your presentation was not printed , as usual, in the IPA's International Journal - officially for lack of space . Marie Langer then resigned from the IPA and APA.

As a result, the tirelessly fighter joined the plataforma-argentina , a psychoanalytic association that advocated socially and politically active psychoanalysis. In 1972, Marie Langer was elected President of the Federación Argentina de Psiquiatras (FAP), she founded the Coordinadora Trabajadores de Salud Mental (CTSM), an initiative that wanted to break down the hierarchies in the hospital, and was appointed to a chair as an assistant professor in 1974. However, Marie Langer had to leave Argentina that same year because her name was on the death lists of the Alianza Anticomunista Argentina (AAA). She went to Mexico , later to Nicaragua , where she helped set up a psychosocial service, organized the world's first congress on Marxism and Psychoanalysis in Havana in 1986 and died of lung cancer in Buenos Aires in 1987 .
