occupation

Lichtes Meer is a coming-of-age film by Stefan Butzmühlen from 2015. The official German theatrical release was on February 4, 2016.

action

Marek starts an internship on a container ship . Full of anticipation, he leaves his parents' farm in Western Pomerania and goes on board in Saint-Nazaire . Marek wants to get to know freedom and falls in love with the mysterious sailor Jean. Gradually they develop a love relationship with each other, but the harmony does not last long. While Marek wants a loving friend and listener, Jean only seems to be looking for a purely physical affair. The two now quarrel more often, until Marek finally gives up the sea voyage in a moment of clarity. The film ends with one last shot in which Marek looks out at the sea from his hotel room and finally turns back to everyday life.

background

For his second feature film after Sleepless Knights , Butzmühlen drove as a director a year earlier for some time as a passenger on a container ship in order to record the daily routines and the mood of the sailors. Other sources of inspiration include the autobiographical notes of Herman Melville , author of Moby-Dick , and the novel Pêcheur d'Islande by the writer and naval officer Pierre Loti .
