The Lichtspiel / Kinemathek Bern is a cinematheque in Bern .

In the early summer of 2000, the Lichtspiel association took over the use of the endangered cinematographic collection of the Bernese cinematographer Walter A. Ritschard, who died in 1998. Building on this, a regional cinematheque was created. Lichtspiel has been a member of the Fédération Internationale des Archives du Film (FIAF) since 2006 .

history

Walter Ritschard Collection

The Bernese cinema technician Walter A. Ritschard (1922–1998) left behind an immense and above all unsorted collection of historically valuable material on the history of cinematography: “Ritschard was a man possessed who dedicated his life to cinema. Even as a teenager he organized film projections under the title 'Cinéma Hardy' in a private setting. ”Ritschard's estate includes over 100 projectors as well as 500 rolls of film and numerous subject-specific paper materials and forms the basis of today's collections of the cinema.

Establishment of a regional cinematheque

The play of light sees its task in saving films and other cinematographic material from decay, destruction and oblivion. Materials are processed, professionally preserved and made available to the public.

Reorientation in the Filmhaus Bern

The Lichtspiel has been part of the Filmhaus Bern since 2012, making it even more of an interface between film practice and the museum.

Popular move

On September 9, 2012, with the help of numerous volunteers, a large number of the historical projectors were moved to the new location by hand.

program

Since the opening of the Lichtspiel, two rolls of film with short films have been put together from the archive every Sunday evening and allow an insight into the film collection of the Kinemathek. There will also be thematic film cycles and retrospectives. As part of its integration into the Filmhaus Bern, the Lichtspiel regularly shows films by regional film artists under the title “Berner Rolle”.

Archive and collection activities

The collections are made up of various deposits from filmmakers as well as private collections and numerous bequests from a wide variety of personalities.

The film archive currently contains around 15,000 film rolls. The focus of the collection is on regional amateur, documentary and educational films. There is also a large selection of scopitones and cartoons in the refrigerator.

In addition to various literature on film, the library also houses numerous Swiss film magazines. Another focus of the collection is literature on film technology, particularly with regard to projection and camera technology.

The archive is part of the Swiss inventory of cultural assets of national and regional importance listed in the A- list of cultural assets in Bern's Mattenhof-Weissenbühl district under KGS no. 8488.
