Licia Albanese

Licia Albanese (born July 22, 1909 in Bari , † August 15, 2014 in New York ) was an Italian-American opera singer ( soprano ) and founder of the Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation .

Life

In 1934 Licia Albanese made her debut at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in Puccini's Madama Butterfly , one of her lifelong star roles. Before she went to America, she enjoyed great success in Italy, France and England. Since 1940 she has been a regular guest at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and in 1945 she became a US citizen . She gained fame through sound recordings with Beniamino Gigli and Arturo Toscanini . In 1975, Albanese set up the Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation to promote young artists and singers.
