The married captain of the training ship Albatros , Gregor Simonis, and the naval medical officer Dr. Karen Stendal have a secret affair. When Gregor's on-board doctor falls ill, Karen seizes the opportunity and is assigned to the Albatros to represent the doctor . Contrary to expectations, Gregor gave his lover a cool welcome and remained strangely reserved in the days and weeks to come. The captain repeatedly points out that he is a married man and that he must serve as a role model for the crew. But Karen senses that these reasons are exaggerated. After all, Gregor's marriage has only existed on paper for some time.
In Lisbon , the journalist Thomas Sand comes on board the Albatros to write a report about women in the Navy. At the same time, Corporal Brengel vies for the favor of the attractive ship's doctor. During the two-day shore leave in Lisbon, the officer candidate harassed Karen so much that she took refuge in a restaurant, where she happened upon sand. Karen plays an appointment with Sand who believes her Brengel and holds back from now on. After the evening in the restaurant, Karen and Sand get closer to each other in a hotel. When the Albatros continues its journey and Gregor falls, Karen learns the real reason for Gregor's repellent behavior through an X-ray: Gregor suffers from an inoperable brain tumor and only has a short time to live. Karen tells him that he is pregnant, but because of his unbearable pain, Gregor falls over the railing one night . Sand, who is the father of the child, and Karen become a couple. Under the new captain, the previous first officer Hannes Meier, Karen remains on board the Albatros .
