history

Liebherr Rostock (2014)
Heavy-duty crane TCC 78000 in the overseas port (2019)

The company was founded in 2002 and manufactures since 2005 at the site of Rostock on a total area of 451,000 m² in the international port mobile harbor, offshore - and ship cranes , reach stackers (reachstackers) and their components. The special, often very large equipment can handle loads of up to 5000 tons. The number of employees grew from 175 in 2005 to 1500 in 2015. The company currently employs over 1600 people.

The Liebherr Academy Rostock was founded in 2009 to secure the next generation and further training of the core workforce. The 8000 m² training center includes workshops, training rooms, production islands and is a state-recognized educational institution. Unemployed people with an education voucher can reintegrate into the labor market here.

In August 2018, the TCC 78000 heavy-duty rail- mounted crane (“Traveling Cargo Crane”) was inaugurated. The 1,600-tonne crane with a total height of 164 meters travels on tracks with a gauge of 30 meters and a length of 420 meters between the factory premises and the adjacent quayside .

Incidents

Damaged HLC 295000 crane on the Orion

In November 2019, Liebherr-MCCtec began erecting the 5000-tonne heavy-duty ship crane of the "Heavy Lift Crane" type HLC 295000 on board the installation vessel Orion . This is the largest ship crane ever built by Liebherr .

On January 31, 2020, two LHM 550 mobile harbor cranes fell into the water while loading onto the heavy lift ship Jumbo Vision of the Dutch shipping company Jumbo Shipping . The two 440-ton mobile cranes were recovered about five weeks later using a floating crane from the Netherlands.

At the beginning of April 2020, the 145 meter long boom of the HLC 295000 was installed on the slewing ring with the help of the TCC 78000 heavy-duty crane . On April 25, the crane was tested in which it performed a complete 360-degree movement with a load of 836 tons and a maximum radius of 115 meters. This corresponds to the same load on the crane that occurs with a load of 5000 tons at a radius of 30 meters. On May 2, 2020, during a lifting test of a 5500-ton pontoon filled with water, the crane hook manufactured by a Liebherr supplier broke under a load of 2600 tons. Due to the sudden break of the load, the ship, which had been lying roughly horizontally in the water on its roll axis , leaned sharply towards the quay. As a result, the double boom snapped backwards, to the quay side, and hit the counter boom, over the top of which it snapped and hit the quay and the ship. Twelve people were injured, two of them seriously. The damage was estimated at 50 to 100 million euros. The recovery should take until the end of 2020.
