Lila Samt is the third studio album by the Berlin rapper Sookee . It was released on April 7, 2014 on the Springstoff label and is available on CD and as a music download . The album title is a reference to Torch's groundbreaking German rap release " Blauer Samt ".

History of origin

After the last studio album Bitches Butches Dykes & Divas , Sookee released the two free downloadable extended plays Parole Bridge Building and Much Together . The album Lila Samt was, like some albums before, produced by LeijiONE. The individual beats come from Majus Beats, Pitlab, Beat 2.0 and Tobias from Irie Révoltés . Guest rappers include form , Amewu , Shirlette Ammons , Spezial-K ( Kurzer Prozess ), Mal Élevé (Irie Révoltés) and Ben Dana ( Radical Hype ). Strings and winds were recorded by Raphael Schalz ( Grossstadtgeflüster ). Refpolk ( headlines ) does the beatboxing for two tracks . DJ Spion Y from Neonschwarz is responsible for the cuts at SPLC and preliminary suicide note .

The album title comes from Sookee's preference for the color purple :

"My apartment is purple, my clothes are purple, my life is purple: purple is my color!"

- Sookee

On the one hand, purple refers to the symbolism of purple dungarees in the women's movement and thus to the feminist tradition, on the other hand, she understands purple as a mixture of the two gender-related colors red (for girls) and blue (for boys).

Texts

In terms of lyrics, the album is a continuation of earlier works. Basically, it is about breaking the boundaries between masculinity and femininity concepts, so-called gender mainstreaming . The texts are written from a left self- image and also contain self-criticism and self-reflection and are in contrast to the often sexist and misogynistic texts of the popular hip-hop scene. Specifically, Julien is addressed by Juliensblog ("I'm struggling with everything terribly, I want to put Julien on the wall"), who published many misogynistic sayings under the guise of satire in his YouTube videos and on his album ANALyse . It also opposes discrimination of any kind:

"On purple velvet I deal with my handling of contradictions in a complex world between idealism and everyday reality."

music

The music is mainly influenced by the dance floor , dubstep and grime and is more experimental than on the previous albums. Only Emoshit & Hippietum is characterized by classic old school hip hop .

reception

In Die Tageszeitung, Jan Rebuschat praises Sookees' development and courage to experiment with music. Above all, he highlights the collaborations Let me do it with the rapper form and even though sometimes with Amewu.

“With“ Lila Velvet ”Sookee proves that she has developed further as a rapper. She experiments with her technique without lapsing into showmanship. She also has a good feel for catchy hooks and accessible images. She has a pleasant musical effect and is one of the most interesting rappers in this country. "
