The winged sea lavender ( Limonium sinuatum ) is a species of the genus sea ​​lavender ( Limonium ) in the family of leadwort plants (Plumbaginaceae).

Cultivated forms can have wider wing strips. Their flowers can also be dark blue, yellow, orange or purple in color.

Vegetative characteristics

The winged sea lavender is a perennial , herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 15 to 40 centimeters. The stem is more or less upright and rough-haired ( indument ). It has four corrugated, 1 to 3 millimeter wide wing strips, which terminate at the nodes in three appendages that are lanceolate, leaf-like and 1 to 8 centimeters long.

All leaves arise from the basal leaf rosette , are pinnate, protruding, rough-haired and measure 3 to 15 centimeters in length and up to 1.5 centimeters in width. There are four to seven round lobes on each side.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from May to September. The umbelliferous inflorescence consists of dense, terminal spikes, which are composed of two to three-flowered spikelets with three bracts. The inner cover sheet is serrated. The uppermost stems are winged like a leaf under the ear. The durable chalice is 10 to 14 millimeters long, funnel-shaped and has a purple, pleated hem. The calyx tube is bare. The crown is decrepit, funnel-shaped and yellowish, white or pink in color.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

Occurrence

The winged sea lavender occurs in the Mediterranean area on sandy and rocky coasts in dry, salty locations.

The winged sea lavender is rarely used as an ornamental plant for summer borders, as a cut flower and as a dried flower . The winged sea lavender has been in cultivation since 1600 at the latest.
