Lindsay Muir is a British balloon athlete and world record holder. In 2012 she became the second European female champion in hot air ballooning in Frankenthal (Palatinate) , after winning the runner-up in Alytus, Lithuania in 2010 .

Athletic career

Muir started ballooning in 1983 . On November 21st, the 200th anniversary of Pilâtre de Rozier and d'Arlandes ' first unbound balloon flight , she received her license as a professional hot air balloon pilot. She has been taking part in FAI World and European Championships since 1989 , where she was regularly the only woman for many years. In 1988 she was the first woman to become British national champion, a success she was able to repeat in 1996. Muir won the first FAI Women's World Cup in 1990 , did the hat-trick in 1993, and won the Cup a fourth time in 1996 after sidelining twice. However, this does not have the rank of world and European championships.

At the 12th World Championships in Battle Creek in 1995, Muir came in 6th place, leaving 80 men behind. Two years later she won silver in hot air ballooning at the first World Air Games . These are placements that no woman could achieve after her.

On May 21, 2000, Muir set a women's world record for travel time in the AX-10 class (hot air balloons from 4000 to 6000 m³). After 19 hours, 7 minutes and 55 seconds, a storm prevented the 24-hour journey that had been planned for three years. The record was still unbroken 15 years later.

Muir (20th place) was "beaten" for the first time by her daughter Chloe Hallet (13th place) at the 3rd Women's World Cup in Nałęczów in 2018 . Hallet has been participating in FAI competitions since 2015, and at 17 she was the youngest British balloon pilot. Muir is married to Graham Hallett, Chief Technical Officer of the British Balloon and Airship Club .

In March 2015, Muir was elected Vice President of the CIA (Commission Internationale d'Aérostation - the balloon commission of the FAI).
