Lionel Giles

Lionel Giles (born December 29, 1875 in Sutton , † January 22, 1958 in St Albans ) was a British sinologist. He is the son of Herbert Giles .

He was curator of the Department of Oriental Printed Books and Manuscripts at the British Museum .

His translation of Sunzi bingfa was famous , he also translated the works Daodejing , Liezi , Mengzi , Lunyu and many other texts from Chinese.

His index to the Chinese encyclopedia Ch'in-ting ku-chin t'u-shu chi-ch'eng ( Qinding gujin tushu jicheng欽 定 古今 圖書 集成) is valuable.

He also wrote a descriptive catalog of the Dunhuang manuscripts in the British Museum .
