The Lirou is a river in France that runs in the Hérault department in the Occitanie region . It rises in the municipality of Les Matelles , first drains in an easterly direction, then turns south to southwest and flows into the Lez as a left tributary after around 11 kilometers in the municipality of Prades-les- Lez . In summer the Lirou often has no water.
geography
Source du Lirou
The Source du Lirou (Eng. Source of the Lirou) or Grotte du Lirou (Eng. Cave of Lirou) is located northwest of Les Matelles at about 135 m. The spring water flows from a bluish shimmering spring pot , at the bottom of which there is a mighty cave portal that slopes upwards. The pouring fluctuates enormously. The karst spring can dry up completely in dry times or give rise to a mighty river after long periods of rain . For a long time it was believed that the Source du Lirou was an underground overflow from the nearby Source du Lez . However, this has been proven wrong. In the spring cave there are numerous siphons that have already been crossed in several dives. The large cave portal in the limestone cliffs can only be accessed for several hundred meters when it is absolutely dry. In 1950 there was a fatal diving accident in the cave. Immediately after the source, the Lirou falls down a waterfall.
course
About 450 m below the source, the Lirou in Les Matelles takes up the 4.1 km long Déridière. This is often mistakenly viewed as the upper reaches of the Lirou. After Les Matelles the Lirou flows in an easterly direction. At the mouth of the Terrieu it assumes its direction of flow to the south. At Prades-les-Lez the Lirou flows after 10.8 km from the left and east into the only 2.5 km long Lez.
