Lisa Bjurwald (born December 24, 1978 ) is a Swedish journalist , columnist and author of investigative non-fiction books on right-wing extremism and right-wing populism in Sweden and other European countries.

Live and act

Lisa Bjurwald has been working as a freelance journalist since the mid-1990s. She began with regular columns for the Swedish daily Expressen , lived in London and Los Angeles, among others, and from 2000 wrote about fashion trends for the Swedish Fashion Council .

She studied political science in Stockholm and completed her bachelor's degree with a focus on crisis management and international cooperation at the Swedish National Defense College in cooperation with Uppsala University . As a political journalist, she wrote editorials for the daily newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet . From 2006 to 2011 she was part of the editorial team of the anti-racist magazine Expo, published by Stieg Larsson . She is a columnist for Norway's international news magazine Ny Tid and the weekly Swedish news magazine Fokus . For her report on the Swiss minaret dispute ( Allas ögon på Switzerland , in Expo , No. 4/2009), she was awarded the European Parliament's Journalism Prize in 2010, which is awarded to journalists who have tackled important European topics in their work.

Together with the journalist Maria Blomquist, she published the investigative book God dag Kampsyster! (German: Hello, combat sister! ) about women in the extreme right and the neo-Nazi movement in Sweden. Subsequently she received from July to September 2009 a Milena Jesenská scholarship for journalists (Milena Jesenská Fellowships for Journalists ) as a Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. In 2011, she presented a comprehensive study on the rise of right-wing extremism in Europe, which she had written before the Anders Breivik attacks in Norway in July 2011. It shows that right-wing extremism, which is expressed in racism , anti-Semitism and the oppression of the Roma , is not a marginal phenomenon in European countries and that right-wing extremists are very effective in recruiting supporters, especially young ones, by using social media . In the second part of the book, she devotes her analysis of the situation in various countries, including Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Hungary and Scandinavia, and explains how powerful right-wing parties have become in Europe. In 2012 the book came out in German translation under the title Europa Schande. Right-wing extremism on the rise . In her book Skrivbordskrigarna ( Keyboard Warriors ), published in 2013 , she deals with radicalization on the Internet and the online activities of the extreme right.

From 2011 to 2012 Lisa Bjurwald was appointed as an expert in the Commission for Combating Xenophobia set up by the Swedish government .
