List of Honolulu Mayors
This list includes all mayors of the city and county of Honolulu in the US state of Hawaii since 1909.
The mayor of Honolulu is the third most powerful politician of Hawaii behind the governor and lieutenant governor of Hawaii . After the mayor's office was created around 1900 and changed in 1907, after the official incorporation on April 30, 1907, the first mayor of Honolulu, Joseph J. Fern , was elected in 1908 , who then began his first term of office on January 4, 1909 . The mayor replaced the governor of Oahu , who previously worked in a similar position in the Kingdom of Hawaii from around 1796 to 1893 . Before that there was the so-called aliʻi nui of Oʻahu , the ruler of Oʻahu, one of the four large islands of Hawaii, for centuries .
The respective term of office lasts four years and the elections are impartial; the seat of the mayor is the listed Honolulu Hale in downtown Honolulu . According to Hawaiian tradition, the wife of the incumbent mayor is honored with the ceremonial title of First Lady of Honolulu .
The incumbent mayor is Kirk Caldwell , born in 1952 , who officially took office on January 2, 2013 and, having been re-elected in November 2016, has held his second term since January 2017.
The longest-serving mayor was Frank Fasi , who was in office from 1969 to 1981 and 1985 to 1994. The second longest incumbent mayor was John H. Wilson , who also had most terms (1920 to 1927, 1929 to 1931, and 1947 to 1955).
