List of mayors of Moscow
The list of mayors of Moscow gives an overview of all the city leaders of the Russian capital Moscow since 1709.
Governors ruled Moscow from 1709 to 1917. In the Soviet Union , chairmen of the executive committee led the city administration from 1917 to 1991. On June 12, 1991, Gavriil Popov was elected the city's first mayor in the first free elections. After Popov's resignation in June 1992, Russian President Boris Yeltsin appointed Yuri Luzhkov as the new mayor. On June 16, 1996 he was confirmed in office with 89.6% of the votes and re-elected in 1999 with 71.0%. In 2003 he was elected mayor of Moscow for the third time with 74.8% of the votes cast. In 2007, the Duma deputies reaffirmed him in office.
In September 2010, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree to dismiss Luzhkov as mayor of Moscow, citing a loss of confidence as the reason. This was preceded by a media campaign by the Kremlin-controlled television stations. Luzhkov was accused of corruption and abuse of office. On September 28, 2010, Vladimir Iossifowitsch Ressin took over the post on a provisional basis . On October 15, 2010, Medvedev proposed the candidate Sergei Semjonowitsch Sobyanin from a list of four as the new mayor to replace the dismissed Yuri Luzhkov. On October 21, 2010, Sobyanin was elected as the new mayor by the Moscow City Parliament with 32 votes to 2.
