Count Ivan Petrovich Saltykov ( Russian Иван Петрович Салтыков ; born June 17 . Jul / 28. June  1730 greg. , † November 2 jul. / 14. November  1805 greg. ) Was a Russian field marshal and governor general of Moscow .

Life

Origin and family

Ivan was a son of the Russian field marshal Count Pyotr Semjonowitsch Saltykow (1698-1773) and the Princess Praskowja Jurjewna, nee Trubezkaja (1704-1767). He married Countess Darya Petrovna Tschernyschowa (1739–1802). The marriage resulted in a son and three daughters, of whom Anna (1777-1824) married the Russian statesman and scholar Grigory Vladimirovich Orlov (1777-1826) in 1800 .

Career

Saltykov served in the Guard of the Imperial Russian Army from 1745 . He was then a junior chamberlain at the imperial court, but advanced to brigadier in 1760 , major general in 1761 and lieutenant general in 1766 . He took part in the Seven Years' War and also fought in the two Turkish Wars of his time, as well as commander- in - chief in the Russo-Swedish War . In 1773 he was appointed General en Chef and in 1784 Adjutant General and Governor of Vladimir and Kostroma . In 1788 he was able to conquer the fortress of Chotyn together with Coburg during the 6th Turkish War .

During his operations he regularly drew criticism from Rumyantsev , which is why he finally resigned in 1795. Paul I took Saltykow back into service in 1796 as general of the cavalry and made him field marshal and inspector general of the cavalry in the same year. He finished his tour as Governor General of Moscow, which he was from 1797 to 1804.

Saltykov was the bearer of the Order of St. Andrew the First Called , the Alexander Nevsky Order , the Order of Vladimir I Class, the Order of St. Anne II Class, the Order of St. John of Jerusalem , the Order of St. George II Class, as well as the golden sword for bravery .

He was buried in the family crypt in Kogajewo , where his father also found his final resting place.
