List of the bishops and archbishops of Berlin
The diocese of Berlin was founded on August 13, 1930 by Pope Pius XI. founded and on June 27, 1994 elevated to the archbishopric of Berlin by Pope John Paul II . Before 1930, the Prussian province of Brandenburg belonged to the diocese of Breslau . Then Berlin became a suffragan of the (new) Archdiocese of Breslau . It was not until 1972 that a new regulation regarding the diocesan borders could be made, and the diocese was no longer a suffragan of Wroclaw, but exempted .
The diocese coat of arms refers to the dioceses of Brandenburg, which were dissolved in the 16th century (2 crossed white / silver keys St. Petrus, diocesan patron on a red background), Havelberg (white / silver cross on a blue background), Cammin (Pomerania) (a gold one on a blue background Runic signs, so-called Pomeranian cross) and Lebus (two crossed white or silver boat hooks on a red background, raised by a gold star) on the basis of which today's Archdiocese of Berlin was founded in 1930.
