Franz Johannes Wilhelm Weskamm (born May 13, 1891 in Helsen near Arolsen ; † August 21, 1956 in Berlin ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Berlin from 1951 to 1956 .

Life

Wilhelm Weskamm was born as the eldest son of a railway official. In 1909 he received his Abitur at the Petrinum Brilon grammar school, and on April 3, 1914, he was ordained a priest in Paderborn . First chaplain in Daseburg near Warburg , he became cathedral vicar in Paderborn in 1919 and worked there as chaplain for thirteen years. In 1932 Weskamm entered the diaspora , where he would live and work until his death. Until 1941 he was pastor at St. Norbert in Merseburg , in 1943 he was appointed provost at St. Sebastian in Magdeburg . In October 1949 he was appointed PopePius XII. as titular bishop of Rhandus and second auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Paderborn , based in Magdeburg. Archbishop Lorenz Jaeger from Paderborn donated him to his episcopal ordination on November 30, 1949 in Magdeburg .

On May 29, 1951 he was appointed Bishop of Berlin (inauguration: July 31, 1951), where he made the theologian Johannes Pinsk his advisor. During this time, Weskamm was very committed to founding training centers for Catholic theologians in the GDR (including the Schöneiche pre-seminar , Norbertinum Magdeburg, Huysburg pastoral seminar ). From 1954 he was also the editor of the Catholic weekly newspaper for the diocese of Berlin St. Hedwigsblatt .

Weskamm had been a member of the Albertia Munich Catholic Student Union in KV since his student days .

Wilhelm Weskamm was buried in the old cathedral cemetery of St. Hedwig Berlin in Liesenstrasse and in 1968 he was reburied in the lower church of St. Hedwig's Cathedral . His name was also carved on the memorial plaque for the deceased of the Friends of the Brandenburger Priest Brandenburgia in the cemetery of the St. Hedwigsgemeinde in Berlin-Alt-Hohenschönhausen .
