The house is one of the most traditional institutions in Magdeburg.

history

From the beginning to the Second World War

St. Marienstift Magdeburg, 1915

The Magdeburg provost Kaspar Friedrich Brieden (1844–1908) developed the idea in 1898 of building a house for charitable purposes. Construction work on the St. Marienstift began in 1904 on an arable land plot of around nine hectares on Harsdorfer Strasse in what was then Magdeburg-Wilhelmstadt, based on designs by the Magdeburg architects Robert Meißner and Adolf Liborius, who were also responsible for the construction of the old town baths in Iserlohn , for example . under the direction of Provost Franz Schauerte (1848–1910). After the inauguration on October 18, 1906, the house was initially a facility for the care of children who did not have to attend school, working parents, orphans and the elderly and frail people. It also served as a household school for girls and a home for the sisters of Saint Elizabeth .

In 1909 the first infirmary with 31 beds was set up and looked after by doctors from various specialties (internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology). During the First World War , the entire building was used as a hospital for 170 wounded.

From September 5 to 9, 1928, the 67th German Catholic Day took place in Magdeburg under local leadership and organized by Provost Petrus Legge , attended by around 40,000 believers and, as the representative of the Holy See in Germany, Nuncio Eugenio Pacelli, who later became Pope Pius XII. participated. Church dignitaries and students from all over Germany were guests in the house during this event.

The Marienstift was reassigned its function as a military hospital during the Second World War and has remained the only Catholic hospital in the city ever since. In 1944 the last child was born in the house for many years. The house survived the destruction of the city on January 16, 1945 almost unscathed.

GDR time

The time of the GDR was marked by the general shortage economy , which was alleviated for the Marienstift through the support of Caritas . Although church facilities were officially rejected by the state, the house as a hospital, which at that time only had the specialist areas of surgery and internal medicine, was also popular with SED officials when it came to their own treatment.

New main departments such as gynecology and obstetrics, anesthesiology and gastroenterology were established. The inpatient ward surgery was transformed into a Department of 2008. On October 2, 2009, a main department for urology was inaugurated.

In 2006 the St. Marienstift was the first and so far only Magdeburg hospital to be certified according to KTQ and recertified by proCum Cert in 2009. In February 2002, the Marienstift concluded an agreement for integrated care with the Association of Substitute Funds , the IKK Saxony-Anhalt and the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians Saxony-Anhalt. This agreement was the first major project that was concluded in the Federal Republic of Germany under § 140 a ff SGB V and is operated under the name "integra - New Paths to Health" .

According to a survey by AOK , Barmer GEK and the “White List” , a joint project of the Bertelsmann Foundation and the largest German patient and consumer organizations, the clinic was one of the most popular hospitals in Germany in 2012.

The number of fully inpatients treated in 2010 was 9,237.

Since January 1, 2014, the clinic has been run in the legal form of a GmbH under the name of Krankenhaus St. Marienstift Magdeburg GmbH under the auspices of the Elisabeth Vinzenz Association .

On the entrance facade there is a large risalit with a pointed gable, in front of it a three-story entrance bay with two-story open loggias . The lower ones have ribbed vaults, the upper ones have a wooden roof. The roof is designed as a roof landscape made of hipped and saddle roofs. The modern extension behind the old building is located in a park-like garden.
