Honorary citizenship

Personalities who have rendered outstanding services to the city can be appointed honorary citizens of the city of Aschaffenburg. Honorary citizenship is the highest distinction the city bestows.

Legal basis

The legal basis is Article 16 of the Bavarian Municipal Code . A city council resolution is required, which is passed in a closed session with a simple majority of the voters. The award can only take place during the lifetime of the person to be honored, as their legal capacity is a prerequisite. The honorary citizenship expires with the death of the honorary citizen.

revocation

A revocation is possible for any behavior which, from the point of view of an objective, impartial observer, is incompatible with the position and special reputation of an honorary citizen. A two-thirds majority of the voting members of the city council is required for the revocation.

Award, withdrawal

The city of Aschaffenburg has been conferring honorary citizenship since 1839. Today this takes place in a solemn form as part of a ceremony with the handing over of the honorary citizenship certificate.

With the incorporation of Damm on July 1, 1901, the honorary citizenship of the factory owner Philipp Dessauer was taken over.

The honorary citizenships of Paul von Hindenburg, Adolf Hitler, Franz Ritter von Epp, Otto Hellmuth and Ludwig Siebert, which arose elsewhere between 1933 and 1945, have been irrelevant since the end of the Third Reich; it was officially withdrawn in 1981.

When Schweinheim was incorporated, Pastor Johann Georg Schweinfest was given honorary citizenship on April 1, 1939, and Pastor Gregor Türk took over honorary citizenship when Gailbach was incorporated on April 1, 1975 .
