Philipp Dessauer (born June 20, 1837 in Aschaffenburg ; † August 19, 1900 ibid) was a German entrepreneur in the paper industry , he was the founder of the white paper and cellulose factory Aschaffenburg (later Aschaffenburger Zellstoffwerke AG or Papierwerke Waldhof-Aschaffenburg AG , today SCA / M-real / Sappi ).

Life

Philipp Dessauer was a son of Franz Johann Dessauer and his wife Alberta (called Berta) Katharina Theresia Dessauer born. Molitor (born April 5, 1810 Aufenau, † May 10, 1888 Aschaffenburg). He married on November 18, 1864 in Aachen and on November 19, 1864 in Aschaffenburg Elisabeth Maria Karoline Vossen (* May 6, 1843 Aachen; † March 30, 1920 Aschaffenburg), a daughter of paint manufacturer Franz Daniel Vossen (1807–1899) from Liège and the coelestine Maria Theresia Louise Vossen born. He received numerous awards and honors, including the honorary title of a (royal Bavarian) commercial councilor .

In the Aschaffenburger Zeitung of 1872 it was stated: The undersigned (community) had the honor of yesterday to submit to his well-born, Mr. Philipp Dessauer, factory director in Aschaffenburg, on the occasion of his great and well-known services, the admission as the first honorary citizen of the community of Damm and brings this to common knowledge with pleasure. On August 19, 1900, Kommerzienrat Philipp Dessauer died after severe suffering. He found his final resting place in the family grave in the Aschaffenburg old town cemetery. In an obituary it was said: The appreciation of his services can be summed up in one word from high mouth, the utterance of Sr. Maj. The Emperor! "That is an excellent man!"

Professional background

After attending grammar school in 1852, Philipp Dessauer joined his father's colored paper factory, which he headed as director from 1866.

In 1872 he founded the AG for machine paper manufacture in view of the shortage of white paper that became noticeable after the Franco-German War . Production began in 1875 with a steam engine of 24 HP, 56 smoothing and 16 embossing machines, two roller printing machines, 15 calendering rollers, a cutting machine, three pumping stations, 75 engraved copper rollers for printing and 56 for pressing, seven cast steel rollers for pressing and several ink mills. This was followed in 1879 by the purchase of four dyeing machines and a friction calender for continuous paper, in 1888 the purchase of a further 120 hp steam engine, three large friction calenders, 18 roller smoothers, a double inking machine and a high-speed lithographic press (according to the report by the Chamber of Commerce for Aschaffenburg and Lower Franconia ).

In 1875 he took over the Alois Dessauer'sche factory in Aschaffenburg, the Buntpapierfabrik AG in Aschaffenburg, the white paper and cellulose factory with production facilities in Damm and Stockstadt , as well as A. Nees & Co. KG in Aschaffenburg and the Buntpapierfabrik Franz Dahlem & Co. in Aschaffenburg, which he led to great success in the paper industry. In 1880 Philipp Dessauer became a co-founder and board member of the Association of German Pulp Manufacturers .

Corporate development

The colored paper mill Franz Dahlem & Co. in Aschaffenburg was acquired in 1963 by the Munich-Dachau paper mills Heinrich Nikolaus GmbH and, after taking over A. Nees & Co. KG in Aschaffenburg (founded 1863) , it was renamed MD-Papierveredelung GmbH on December 31, 1966 , today Letron GmbH & Co. KG (Aschaffenburg), Transfertex GmbH & Co. (Kleinostheim) and MDV Papier- und Kunststoffveredelung (Karlstein am Main).

The colored paper AG in Aschaffenburg was 1967 in the Feldmühle AG on (Dusseldorf). Production in Aschaffenburg was discontinued. The “City-Galerie” shopping center is located on the site today.

One of his sons was Hans Dessauer sen. who succeeded the company in 1900. The youngest son was Friedrich Dessauer . His grandchildren included Hans Dessauer Jr., who went to the USA in 1936 because the National Socialists prevented him from joining the company because of his Jewish descent, and his brother, the entrepreneur, art collector and university professor Guido Dessauer . One granddaughter, Elisabeth Marielies Schleicher , was a member of the Bavarian State Parliament from 1962 to 1974. MEP Ursula Schleicher is a great-granddaughter.
