The Birth of Mary and the Birth of Mary is a Catholic parish church built in 1894/95 in the Schweinheim district of Aschaffenburg .

history

Ecclesiastically, Schweinheim belonged to the Aschaffenburg Mother of God Parish . The first chapel in Hain, as Schweinheim was then called, was built around 1660. It was 40 feet long, 32 feet wide, 25 feet high, the choir 10 feet deep, tiled with a roof turret with two bells. The patron saint of the church was St. Alban von Mainz , whose feast day is celebrated on June 21. In 1756 the church was rebuilt and expanded, the foundation stone was found when this church was demolished.

After extensive planning by the Aschaffenburg architects and contractors Franz and Roman Wörner, the foundation stone of the Church of the Birth of Mary was laid on June 10, 1894 . A quarter of a year later, on the feast of the birth of the Virgin Mary (September 8th), the straightening bouquet was sitting on the tower. The neo-Gothic hall church made of red and white sandstone has four supporting pillars , 43 m long, 18 m wide, 12.50 m / 14.50 m high and has a 57.90 m high tower. Altars, pulpit, communion bench and choir stalls were made by Bruno Link in Stockheim near Mellrichstadt . The colored glazing of the windows was made in Hermann Beiler's workshop in Heidelberg . The Schiestl brothers in Würzburg created the choir arch cross . The figures of saints from the old church were also set up. Altar covers, vestments and canopies were made by the local poor school sisters, the community had a special benefactor in the Archbishop's Spiritual Council Adalbert Huhn, pastor at the Heilig-Geist-Kirche (Munich) , whose father was born in Schweinheim. A Gothic monstrance, cibories, candlesticks and some vestments came from there.

In 1955 the interior of the church was redesigned according to the liturgical development. A table- shaped high altar was set up, the central window in the choir was designed by the young artist Friedrich Höfer from Bensheim . The other stained glass windows were created by local artists.

The church was “de-gothicized” in 1961 and completely redesigned in 1999 according to the overall concept of the Viennese sculptor and artist Leo Zogmayer. All windows and liturgical objects were specially designed for this room in a greatly reduced design language. It is a bright room that lets those entering breathe space and freedom, clarity and openness. It is perfect for liturgical and cultural gatherings as well as for meditation .

The Madonna, an early Baroque work, comes from the Loretto Chapel of the Capuchin monastery in Mainz, which was closed by the French in 1802 . It was installed in the old Schweinheim church in 1805.

Patronage

The patronage of the parish of the Nativity of Mary is in the Latin original: Nativitatem Virginis Mariae celegremus Christum eius filium adoremus Dominium .

Pastor Schweinfest placed all his concerns about the church building under the protection and intercession of Mary and especially about the day of remembrance of the “Birth of Mary”. That is why he made sure that all important events relating to the building of the church were linked to this memorial day.

  • On September 8, 1892 the old church was closed by the police (dilapidation).
  • On September 8, 1893, after long discussions and negotiations, the approval for the new church was given.
  • The topping-out ceremony took place on September 8, 1894.
  • It was consecrated on September 8, 1895 by Bishop Franz Joseph von Stein .

Bells

Since the Feast of Corpus Christi (June 8th) 1950, five bells have been ringing in the tower . They were cast from “Briloner Sonderbronze” in the Albert Junker bell foundry in Brilon on May 19th, 1950 and consecrated on Pentecost Sunday (May 28th) by Vicar General Vinzenz Fuchs from Würzburg :

  • Bell 1, (cis'), 2430 kg, with the inscription: “St. Maria, screen Schweinheim ”-“ Rev. Umenhof let us pour "

The new brochure was designed by Ottmar Schimmelpfennig. Three trapezoidal towers, delimited on the outside, are connected to one another by harp-shaped flat fields. The closed case made of solid oak has veils of lattice-like ornaments. The organ is now in the tower chamber. During the redesign in 1999, the extended gallery was dismantled back onto the central nave. The organ itself did not have to be removed during the redesign of the interior, the veils were removed.

The organ is played primarily for the musical arrangement of all liturgies of the annual cycle. Since 2012 she has appeared in a very unusual way in the “Concert Series for New Music” AUDINOVA, in which only compositions from the 20th and 20th 21st century to be played to sound. Oddities

The old Schweinheim church of St. Alban around 1890

Pastor Johann Georg Schweinfest describes his arrival in the parish as follows:

“When I wanted to see the Schweinheim parish that had been lent to me on July 12, 1887 ... and landed in Aschaffenburg by train, I got on a cart that was supposed to take me to Schweinheim. Unfamiliar with the location, we asked for the rectory at the train station and received the answer: 'The church just opposite'. When I reached the Heideberge (Schweinheimer Höhe) I stretched my neck even more, looked forward, looked right and left. I thought to myself: 'But that can't be the parish village of Schweinheim; you don't see a church or a tower. We went downhill, but I still didn't see a church or a tower. Suddenly the driver stopped. 'What's going on, why are we stopping here'? I asked. 'Here (pointing to the right) is the rectory,' was the answer. But ... "here is no church far and wide". 'Yes (pointing to the left) here is the church too,' replied the coachman. When I saw a black, towerless building with a primitive, half-rotten door, I exclaimed, 'For God's sake, this should be a church? I thought it was a fire station '. The poor little church had a little turret (roof turret), 'the ancient town hall and the tall, wide and leafy chestnut tree' had covered it. It didn't help, I had reached my destination! When I saw the rectory inside, I thought to myself: "Now I understand why the Schweinheim parish was advertised twice for applications despite the proximity of the city of Aschaffenburg ...". "
