Planning

Various plans for new stations along the existing lines are currently under discussion:

  • The regional council has proposed a Western Corridor Plan to improve connections in the Kapiti area. Two new stations are to be built for this purpose. Raumati Station , originally planned for 2009, is to be built south of Paraparaumu Station, possibly between the intersection with National Road 1 and Poplar Avenue. The Lindale station , originally planned for 2010, is to become part of a larger transfer hub north of Paraparaumu train station, but this would require further expansion of the electrification. However, the Western Corridor Plan has not yet been implemented and instead it was decided in 2007 to electrify the route to Waikanae . In the course of this, the Paraparaumu and Waikanae stations were expanded and the latter station is now connected to the Wellington suburban network. These steps, which were completed in February 2011, would not have been planned for the next twenty years in the Western Corridor Plan.
  • The Hutt Corridor Plan proposes electrification and expansion of operations north of Upper Hut, with two new stations, Timberlea and Cruickshank Road . In December 2012, the regional council decided to pursue the plan.
  • There are plans for a new station between Porirua and Paremata to connect the Aotea area, one station south of Takapu Road (to connect Glenside and other new development areas in Johnsonville), one station between Paekakariki and the planned Raumati station (near McKay's Crossing ), and even an underground station in the Tawa Tunnel (to connect Newlands above). These plans are not included in the Western Corridor Plan.

There are also plans to shut down stations in order to increase the travel times of trains by eliminating stops. The discussion was that either Redwood or Takapu Road could be shut down, or Pukerua Bay or Muri, as the remaining stations could adequately cover the area. However, these suggestions are not included in the Western Corridor Plan.
