history
The oldest lighthouse that exists today is the Motael lighthouse in Dili, which was built in 1896. But there was a lighthouse in the colonial capital earlier. A drawing by Pedrozo , who visited Dili on the warship Martinho de Mello on June 15, 1864, shows the "Pharol de Timor" off the coast . Presumably the lighthouse marked the entrance to the Bay of Dili between the coral reefs.
During the Portuguese colonial period, other beacons were in operation. Ruins of lighthouses are Lore I and Iliomar . Another beacon stood in Batugade .
The lighthouse on Jaco may no longer exist.
