List of Heads of Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The following list of Heads of Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) lists the presidents of the Executive Yuan in the Republic of China (Taiwan) in chronological order. This role corresponds to that of a prime minister and this designation, which is also mostly used in the international press, is used in the following for the sake of simplicity. The list begins with the entry into force of the Constitution of the Republic of China in Taiwan on December 25, 1947.

For the period before 1948, see the List of Heads of Government of the Republic of China (1912–1949) .

Tabular list and explanations

Up to the year 2000, the prime ministers came exclusively from the ranks of the Kuomintang (with the exception of Wang Yun-wu , who, as a formally non-party member, served as a transitional premier for 2½ months in 1963). During the presidency of Chen Shui-bian ( Democratic Progressive Party , DPP) 2000-2008, the prime ministers came from the ranks of the DPP for the first time. However, these governments had a hard time, as the parties in opposition to the DPP and President Chen consistently retained a majority in parliament (the legislative yuan ). In the years 2008-2016 the Kuomintang filled the presidency and, accordingly, the prime ministerial post. After the presidential election in 2016 , which was won by the DPP candidate Tsai Ing-wen , a certain softening of the party political polarization was observed for the first time when President Tsai, despite the absolute DPP parliamentary majority, was not a DPP party member after the 2016 election , but the Non-party Lin Chuan appointed Prime Minister.

While in the first decades of the Republic of China's existence in Taiwan, almost all prime ministers were born not in Taiwan but in mainland China, this ratio has reversed since the turn of the millennium.

In the numbering in the table below, people who only held a brief executive office because the incumbent was divorced from office were not counted with their own numbers. The numbering is personal and not related to the term of office, ie persons who were again head of government at a later time are marked with the number assigned to them first. Sun Fo and Chen Cheng held the post of head of government for a while during the Republic of China (1912–1949) .
