Wong Wenhao

Wong Wenhao , also Weng Wenhao, Wong Wen-Hao, (born July 26, 1889 in Cixi (Ningbo) , † January 27, 1971 in Beijing ) was a Chinese geologist and prime minister.

Wong was the son of a wealthy businessman, studied geology in China and Europe, and received his PhD from Leuven University in 1912. He was then Professor of Geology in Beijing at the National Geography Research Institute and also at Beijing University and Tsinghua University . In 1922 he was the founder (with Ding Wenjiang ) and director of the Geological Survey of China. In 1931 he became acting president of Tsinghua National University. In 1934 he became the manager of the Chung Fu Mining Co. He supported the excavations on the Peking man from the 1920s (by Davidson Black and others).

He served in the Beiyang government in the 1920s and was Secretary General of the Chinese Government ( Executive Yuan ) from 1935 to 1937 . He was also Minister for Industry, Education (1932/33) and 1938 to 1947 for Economics and President of the State Commission for the Development of China's Natural Resources. May to November 1948 until he was Prime Minister of the Kuomintang government in Nanking under Chiang Kai-shek . He also continued his career in the People's Republic of China and was in the Political Consultative Conference of the Chinese People . During the Cultural Revolution he was protected by Zhou Enlai .

He was an honorary doctor from the University of British Columbia and the TU Berlin in Charlottenburg. From 1941 to 1944 he was President of the Chinese Engineers Association.

He wrote books on the mineral deposits in China, the mountain ranges of China, and earthquake regions in China.

In 1935 he became a member of the Leopoldina , in 1947 the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1948 the Academia Sinica and he was a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences .
