Sun Yun-suan

Sun Yun-suan ( Chinese  孫 運 璿 , Pinyin Sūn Yùnxuán , born November 11, 1913 in Penglai , Shandong Province ; † February 15, 2006 in Taipei ), was a Chinese national engineer and politician.

Life

As Minister of Economic Affairs ( 1969 - 78 ) and Premier of the Republic of China ( 1978 - 84 ) he was primarily responsible for the transformation of Taiwan from an agricultural - in an export nation .

In 1934 , shortly before it was taken over by the Japanese, Sun received his engineering degree in electromechanics from Harbin Polytechnic . In 1945 he moved from China to Taiwan to work for the Taiwan Power Company , which was founded in 1946.

Prior to his work as Minister of Transport ( 1967 - 69 ) Sun held various engineering positions held. In 1969 he became Minister of Economic Affairs, then Prime Minister of the Republic of China on May 30, 1978 . He became one of the chief architects of Taiwan's economic boom in the 1980s. This happened during Sun's tenure through the ten infrastructure projects , which also included the completion of Chiang Kai-shek International Airport ( Taiwan Taoyuan Airport since 2006 ) and Taiwan's first highway .

Sun was highly regarded by Chiang Ching-kuo and considered his legacy, but his political career ended after a stroke in 1984 . Lee Teng-hui became Chiang's heir and successor. Sun's term ended on May 20, 1984, and he was given the honorary position of Advisor to the President of the Republic of China. Since then he has been the main advisor on health issues, especially prevention of high blood pressure in the elderly.
